This is not a very dramatic example but I thought it was worth a pick up for $3. The coin weighs 2.26g so its not a planchet issue. I think the lack of detail on the torch is a good clue to this error as well as the poorly defined reeding.

Well above my pay grade. Is that normal with a weak strike to have the real weak areas at the rim that correspond front to back? 7 to 9 o'clock on the obverse, 8 to 11 o'clock on the reverse?

Could be a Greaser. This is above my pay grade, so I could be wrong.

Very interesting coin, CoinHI. Is the diameter far off from 17.91 mm?

Yes, diameter is spot on.

I like looking for these errors and sometimes I get it wrong but that's half the fun.

1. corresponding weakness on opposite sides is a good indicator of low pressure or tapered planchets. Since the weight is good it then leans to a LP strike diagnosis.

2. Grease strikes wouldn't be confined to just these two opposing sides on a coin.

3. Poorly struck design rims and evidence of proto rim are typical of LP strikes. Grease strikes also have well defined rims.

4. Weakly struck edges are typical of LP strikes.

Again, not the best example but I think I'm correct on this. Maybe it could be defined as a tilted low pressure strike.

It was nice to see you mention those dies as tilted. That's what popped into my noggin after seeing the week rim.

Out of curiosity, are the reeds fairly strong where the details are strongest (@ +-K4)?

The edge weakness seems to be consistent throughout the coin regardless of where the details are the strongest or weakest.

Looks more like a slightly tapered planchet. That would explain the lite weight.

It does look tapered, but the weight is 2.26g and normal is 2.27. Not enough difference, IMHO, to be tapered.
