My second post! I'm going through my stepdads coin collection and he has this 1964 penny in it. I don't know if he kept it for any sentimental purposes or if there is something valuable about it? I looked on Google who has misled me many many times and all I can think is that it could be a rim error where the L in "Liberty" is on the edge along with "In God We Trust" but I feel like I need someone with more knowledge about these opinion.

I recognize this post may have to be moved to the correct sub-forum. I thought I posted it there but I guess I didn't?

I just now moved it to the Variety and Error Coins sub-forum. If you click on your user name, you can find all your recent topics.

L on rim is clickbait that has spread far and wide. The rim above IGWT appears to be thin or missing. Possibly a misaligned die but I'm thinking the coin was mechanically ground/sanded on that edge. A picture of the edge there would help.

Yeah.Google has led me astray so much. I have pictures of the rim I can post. My stepdad was born in 1964 so that could have been why he kept it. I like this forum. It helps me to filter what is valuable and what isn't.

Quote: I can think is that it could be a rim error where the L in "Liberty" is on the edge along with "In God We Trust" Welcome to one of the latest ebay shyster fads in coins. Online media knows most people know nothing about the real coin hobby and so shysters take advantage of people's legitimate ignrance hoping to sucker people out of money. Sadly the following is very true: Note I am NOT saying you are someone just looking for a way to get rich. The following graphic represents how non-collectable coin imperfections have become famous enough to have a lot of people thinking worthless coins are collectable. Note the bottom line specifically tells you how to save yourself time and start finding things the hobby actually collects.

New thumb-held pics aren't really helpful.

Thanks for the information. I was just curious as to why my stepdad dad kept it. I imagine it had sentimental value to him for some reason. I did want to see if he knew something I didn't. Google is very deceptive and shows A LOT of coins with "errors" but I don't really trust all of them. That's why I come to you guys to help guide me so I can get better at identifying genuine errors vs scam errors or PMD. Thanks guys!

Google shows many listings for ebay, Mercari, and Etsy - some of the worst places to look if if you don't know what you're looking at. This is the place to learn. Look at the reference sites and get a general knowledge of how coins are minted. Most of all, keep looking at coins.
