I believe it's fake. 1877 Trade dollars should have a type 2 reverse, and this one has a type 1 reverse.

Why isn't this coin in a holder? PCGS or NGC should be grading a $10,000 coin.
The eagle's head doesn't match real 1877-CC examples. Especially the gaping bill and the round eye, which look more like an 1875-CC.

Agree with Zurich, the last year for a type 1 reverse was in 1876 so this has to be a counterfeit.

100% fake as noted by Zurie above. The type 1 reverse was only used on Trade dollars in 73, 74, 75 and 76. The type 1 features on reverse are the neck feathers, arrow tip position above 420, leaf position between the O and F and design of arrow feathers.

Thanks for posting ... once again, I am humbled by the members here, willing to specify and support good advice / information. I will be pulling my one ungraded Trade dollar to do some further inspection / verification.

Here are a few other changes on the reverse that are easy to spot on type 1 and type 2. 1) Eagle neck feathers on type 1 do not touch eagle's shoulder, on the type 2 the neck feathers touch the shoulder. 2) On type 1 the wing tip is above the middle arrow rod on type 2 the wing tip touches the middle arrow rod. 3) The stem above the S in Grains is longer on type 1, and shorter on type 2. The arrow feathers are different on type 1 vs type 2. 4) The two leaves next and above the F in Fine are in different positions in type 1 vs type 2.

If fakes are getting this good, I might be in the wrong hobby. This thread is like a 'how to improve my product' for the fraud artists.

Is it possible that a type 1 reverse die( from 1876 was left over and paired with an 1877 obverse die?

Quote: Is it possible that a type 1 reverse die( from 1876 was left over and paired with an 1877 obverse die? Mistakes did happen at the mint, but there is no known or documented 77 CC with a type 1 reverse. The OP counterfeit has deceptive details, but there are some other issues that could be used to sort out this counterfeit. ..
