Interested to hear about the edge. Does seem a bit off. I'm surprised this did not make AU-50. Weakly struck EPU in common for some die pairs.

I was going to go AU50; it is a beautiful coin!

Seems like a harsh grade for this one.

I'll update when the coin is in hand. I think this may be worth sending to NGC to see if it will upgrade. Thoughts?

Will wait for in hand observation before future speculation.

It's a nice looking bust half that could grade AU50 on a different day. Nothing wrong with a conservatively graded piece.

I have a raw 1836 of similar grade. with a full E Pluribus Unum I would grade it too at XF 45

OP's coin is undergraded in my opinion and certainly has nice eye appeal. Congrats on a worthy acquisition!

Nice coin! 1836 only has the one variety for the reeded edge halves so 1 and done. I'd keep it in that holder.

Nice to see the top level TPG's are becoming little bit more conservative again. I feel that they have been tempted to some extent to follow a trend to give higher grades in recent times, with re submissions For the TPG's, easier higher grades means more business for them, but it now seems that a re balancing is taking place against giving higher grades, in order to preserve their reputation. I would hate to see a rush towards the basement !

In this case I still believe the edge is damaged. Notice there are bold rim fins on both sides of the coin. The striking chamber never included a retaining collar, so it would be impossible for a fin to be created at the mint.

Ok, jacrispies, I'm wanting to learn. I see what you're referencing on the coin and don't dispute your observation. What I can't figure is why somebody would damage the edge and leave Obv and Rev untouched. For what reason? Cui bono? BTW, still happy with this coin. Really nice in-hand. Coin retains a lot of luster. Weak strike with very minimal wear, IMO. I'm thinking more AU55 for my personal opinion, having the coin in-hand. It really pops. My opinion is meaningless with a slabbed coin, of course.
