An online seller I will see in person has this coin and I'm curious what the forum thinks...very little cc gold here in Italy.

Thanks!

R.

This is a low mintage date with with about 1,000 estimated survivors. As such it's worth far over melt value in almost any condition. I agree it could make AU50 but it has to be authenticated. It may have been cleaned (probably was at some point) but does not appear harshly cleaned. The images have too much light on the coin and it's likely a shade darker in-hand. Nothing screams counterfeit.

Retail a $6,000 USD piece if genuine. I'd start out verifying the weight and dimensions and then have an expert examine it in-hand before paying anywhere near that kind of money for it.

Anyone see any signs of this coin being fake? I won't have it in hand for about three weeks but I intend to reach out to the seller on Tuesday.

Photos aren't very clear but the coin looks like it has honest wear. My guess it is genuine.

While I don't see signs of an obvious counterfeit. It does have an unusually uneven strike (or planchet) as witnessed by the obverse rim being smooth from 1:00 to 4:00. That is not from wear as the reverse rim at that location is fine and the rest of the obverse plus the stars in that area have good detail.

So, the obverse rim concerns me and and the color is off too, but I attributed that to the images. Be careful. What's the asking price?

As a follow-up, to see a rim like that I had to go all the way down to PCGS's plate coin for a VG08. Look at the stars near the area where the rim is gone on the OP coin and look at them in the same area of the VG08. Also note the color and overall appearance.

The coin in question might well be genuine but I wouldn't buy it without professional authentication.

, get it slabbed with a TPGrader of the highest reputation, just to have it authenticated.
I might be very difficult to sell, if it is not slabbed.

I don't buy slabbed coins, because I am very poor at authenticating the slab. My problem.

As it stands:

Below is the OP coin and a PCGS VF35. Both these appear to be off of the same die as the date, mint mark and rims are a match. The OP coin could still be a transfer die counterfeit. There are a couple of items on the reverse that would give me some concern. Note the circle area on reverse in blue are not a match, and the rim wear on obverse appears excessive on one side that could have been caused by die transfer. I would not purchase the OP example raw as any deal would need TPG certification before final payment is made. My grade for purchase offer would be in the VF 20/25 range.

Might have also been in a bezel at some point for jewelry use which may have compressed the rims at least in that section.

VF-30 is good with me. Unusual to see such a heavily circulated double eagle. A desirable CC nonetheless!!

I had noted that there were some other differences on the reverse that would give me a concern that the example could be a counterfeit. These concern areas are circled in blue on the PCGS example.

The OP bottom serif on the T in united next to the E is a lot longer than the PCGS example.
All the bottom T base serifs on the PCGS example have a little slope up on the OP example the bottom T base on the serifs are all straight.
Look at the curl below the arrows on the OP example the curl cavity is different and the line is much thicker.

My recommendation is that the seller sends this example to NGC UK before any money changes hands. If the example is genuine you pay for the grading fees, he pays for the fees if the example can not be certified. If he does not want to send it to NGC UK, PASS.
