As I start my 3rd time at coin collecting, and Eisenhower dollars my coin of choice I'm trying to educate myself better on the grading.
That got me to thinking at work today, A coin that comes out of a mint cello pack, I know that the quality of the coin my vary, but in general (Thinking Ike dollar here) where would they fall?

Chris

To CCF! The Ike will probably be pretty nice coming out of a mint cello.

Ike dollars are notorious for having heavy bag marks and blems. Here is a link to the PCGS photograde site so you can try to match your coin to one of the grades shown. Since you are starting again with Ike dollars, may I suggest you purchase a 1973 mint set since both Ikes in the set are only available from mint sets unless somebody broke a set up.

Agree with MisterT--Ikes are bag mark magnets.

This is true.

Ikes from mint sets seem to fair better, but they are not immune from mishandling. The thing that gives the mint set Ikes a better chance at surviving in a higher grade is their not being shipped in a bag with other Ikes. However, the OGP is not immune from transmitting bumps and bruises.

I was much younger when building my original set. It started in a folder and I pretty much collected whatever my teenage budget could acquire. My low bar remained even when I moved the set to the Dansco album, which my grandfather had bought me. When the set was competed—over thirty years ago now—I never felt a need to upgrade any of the coins. Their sentimental value was too strong.

I eventually decided to build a second set with higher quality Ikes. I opted to use graded coins—PCGS in my case—to accomplish this goal. It was a fun and fulfilling adventure. Most of the coins came from ebay, although some were bought at a coin show or came from other CCF members. The ebay coins were always a gamble, having to trust the label and images. I have no complaints, but YMMV!

Gamall Maor,

I Too enjoy the IKES or Eisenhower Dollars.....

Do you seek any Brown box examples, They are Sweet....

Pulled out some All Original Brown Box 1971-S- 1974-S examples, .....

Best to Cherry-Pick 2 local B&M coin shops, The Bay has excellent options, Just research your coins well.... Buy the coin, Not the slab.....

Best Wishes....

The '76 type I will normally be MS-62. The '73 P & D will be MS-63. The rest will be MS-64.

Of course any date could be as poor as MS-60 or as nice as MS-68.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.
