Question Regarding Possibly Removing Some Sticky Substance From Coins?

TeeEss86 Valued Member United States 181 Posts	Posted 01/21/2025 1:21 pm SoI have a pretty good load of Indian Head Pennies and Wheat Pennies that were pretty much just loosely floating around in an old coffee can for I don't know how many years separated from the bulk of the collection passed down to me which was well protected. However, quite a few of them got a sticky substance like tree sap from pine trees, which would make somewhat sense, considering my late grandfather lived in a forested area with Pines. my question is, would it be saving off to soak them in hot water with a bit of Dawn Dish soap? I know it doesn't have any harsh additives as I have read the contents and it's widely known that it is used on wildlife and other animals. Even though, I have just always heard never never never clean a coin so if I could get some input on this matter, I would greatly appreciate it! westernsky Pillar of the Community United States 7614 Posts	Posted 01/21/2025 1:28 pm I'd try a 100% pure Acetone soak with a water rinse on a few of the worst affected coins and see what kind of results you get. That will likely dissolve a lot of sticky materials. If that doesn't work, an acetone soak would be reasonable. Report this Post to the Staff
