Brings up an interesting question to ponder. Based on the method of manufacture, when would be the earliest a US coin would have been struck showing Machine Doubling? Anyone know the answer?

I would have NO clue but I'll bet you do, Spence. I would assume when a machine was first used to make coins but not sure when that would have been, not the historian you are. Without googling anything, my guess would be from China though, no clue of a time period. Look forward to the answer though, teach me.
Does Longacre doubling count? It looks like MD. It seems that MD became an issues after the switch to electric presses. But this is only my guess. I haven't looked at enough coins minted prior to know. Also, I don't know how the steam presses operated.
