When coming across something seen below, how can one best determine what it is? (Different planchet, different coin originally, etc.) I took two pics with different lighting to better highlight.

It's a die clash. You are seeing some of the reverse design, the dies came together without a planchet impressing some of the reverse design on the obverse die.

Yes, it is a clash and on a very nice conditioned older coin. Worth keeping safe from damage or stain.

It looks like a clash dies the numerous hair line scratches indicating the abrasion marks where mint abraded away most os the clash but not all, cool find.
