This is a coin for your collection! And an awesome one at that. Maybe one day it will be a better known variety and have an actual book value. You could possibly get ANACS to certify it but it may be a details coin.

ANACS might put RED-001 on the slab, but they don't have the image technology to share the coin. If I had it graded, I think PCGS TrueView would be the way to go, so that the variety could be easily accessed and studied by many. I sent them an email asking if PCGS attributes minor re-engraved die varieties that are not FS-400 or FS-900 entries, but I have not yet heard back.

Regarding study, I did e-mail Dr. Wiles about the coin with some pictures. A few days later, I got a somewhat generic reply about the fees to have doubled dies inspected. I thought he would be keen to expand the Variety Vista entry with images of a better preserved coin. I have not yet figured out if the Wexler team looks at die varieties for their published catalog. Truthfully, I am not excited at the idea of mailing the coin without understanding its value. You can arbitrarily put $1000 insurance on a USPS package, but how would you ever prove the coin was worth that much with no consensus value? Also, the postal service seems to be having problems lately, and if they lost this specimen, who knows how long it could be until we find another?

Entirely possible, I get quite enthusiastic after a successful variety hunt. =)


Indeed? Your post last October said "1 of 2 known", and the Variety Vista entry is still cataloged as "Remains unique at this time". So I thought that this coin might be only the third 1941-RED example known, and finally a specimen without heavy circulation.

If more people have located examples of this die variety, I think that's pretty exciting anyway. Collectors are obviously interested in the re-engraved tail feather varieties, and the re-engraved leaves are more intricate and interesting.
