The coin appears harshly cleaned and unnaturally white. This is the type of stuff to stay away from, in my opinion. When it comes time to sell the buyers will usually be scarcer than the coin which will naturally be factored into a seriously discounted price.

Meh, I say that one of those in ANY condition is quite a find, regardless of price.

That's a VF coin that would be worth a ton if not for the cleaning. It's still worth a lot to somebody who wants that date.

Good example of how harsh cleaning can really damage a coin - and it's value. That's an $800 coin according to Numismedia in VF-20; $4000 in XF-40.

I don't care how rare a coin is, personally, I couldn't stand to look at it if it were a problem or has a problem. That harsh cleaning stripped off the original surfaces. The coin's value (price paid) reflects the "value" placed on it by others. There's different "levels" of problems in my estimation. But this one was pretty high on the scale of obvious.

Fair price. If it were mine it would go into the pocket as a carry piece with some other junk silver. After a year it emerges as a legitimate uncleaned fine. But I'd probably keep carrying it until it was an AG. Pre 1860 SF coins are the ne plus ultra of US coinage IMHO. It's like having the gold rush right in your pocket.
