Two questions for this one:

1) With this luster, does it simply mean it was closer to a first strike or how does it get to look like this?

2) Do TPG's give points for luster, if say you are lacking in another area?

There are a few PL's in mint sets (~.25%). There area lot of very highly lustrous coins (~5%).

It's hard to tell from the picture which this is. I believe you're right that it's PL though.

Thanks!

Here are other pics from a different camera. At PCGS, I didn't see any PL's for this year/mint mark. If they come across one, would they give that designation?

I doubt it. They are very stingy with the designation so almost no coin qualifies. The new picture makes me pretty sure it's what I call PL however it is not as dramatically PL as others I've seen. On the bright side though it is extremely clean for a '76-D so could get a high grade and maybe a bump for the luster and PL.

It's not quite my cup of tea but by any standard it's one of the finest for the date. It's at least within one grade of being pop top but I doubt it's really a "money coin" unless it gets PL.

I'm pretty sure it's not the DDO.

Is that a 'spot' in the vicinity of the O in GOD?

That kind of spot usually won't come off in alcohol but it will be lightened a lot.

Pictures are too bright to evaluate thoroughly. That being said, there is a "milk spot" on the obverse around the "o"in God and the obverse of the second rat h set of pictures at the bridge of the nose some sort of scratch marks..some hairlines in the obverse fields as well.

That certainly seems like an unusually polished planchet. Was it from an uncirculated set?
