This Nickel is black, with luster and toning. It was challenging to capture a proper image of it. I provided images with different lighting to try and show the steps and toning.

The color is consistent throughout the coin.

It looks like black crud on the rim with normal nickel (CuNi) peeking through. I vote environmental staining.

Thanks for the replies and opinions. Maybe chemically treated or heat treated, but in 35 years of metal detecting, East to the West coast, and 4 cigar boxes and 3 Folgers cans full to the brim of environmentally challenged coins, I can tell you this coin has never been on or in the ground. The coin is too pristine for this to be the case.
