I learned fast that this is the place to come for help identifying not just coins but what has happened to coins. Will someone have a look at this penny and explain? I think I know but wanted to hear it from the resident experts.

P.S. I didn't know what I had here until moving it around in the light, an effect I tried to capture with the different pictures below.

Looks like it was glued to a nickel. What you see is dried glue of a portrait of Jefferson. A little acetone soak would probably take it off.

Agree, looks to be a 'glued to' image of a Jefferson nickel. Do give the coin a soak in 100% acetone and let us know the outcome. Thanks.
