Does anyone else do this? The majority of my coins that I fill in the slots in my albums are from bank roll hunting and circulation... So that doesn't always make for the prettiest coins. I have found some really nice ones, though.

I was thinking about this recently in regards to a particular situation... I completed my Dansco Jefferson nickel 1938-2005 album a few months back or so, comprised of business strikes. I did have quite a few BU condition coins however that I added into a new set with was another Dansco album, but this time with proofs. However, I recently opted to abandon this idea in favor of adding the BU coins to my already completed set, and swapping out the coins. I also added my existing proofs to a nice blank page at the end my already existing album. I like keeping them separate and altogether, especially since Dansco's particular Jefferson nickel album contains only "proof only" issues, which start at 1971. This way, I am able to keep all my proof Jeffersons/SMS together going back to 1956.

Despite my set being complete, I am possibly weighing purchasing some more BU coins to swap out some of them eventually. It would be nice to see them all BU condition, but that would be an expensive adventure.
Does anyone else practice this?

I always upgrade my Dansco albums whenever a better piece comes along.

Do you purchase, or through circulation/coin roll hunting? Or both?

Usually a mix of roll searching and purchasing 'old' albums/folders and pulling the best examples. Occasionally will pick up individual pieces if the price is decent.

I have never been one to play the upgrade game. When a hole is filled, it is filled. Part of it is sentiment, the other part is being able to see how my collecting habits and tastes have changed over time.

With US modern coins, I look for the best ones I can find in circulation, and before each trip to the USA I make a list of the ones that aren't in great condition so that I can replace them if I find a better one in change. With other coins in my collection, I tend to upgrade them only if they are really worn, holed or damaged, and I'll often keep the original coin for sentimental reasons, if, for instance, I got in change as a kid or a long-dead Great Aunt gave it to me.

I do use upgrades sometimes - usually when my original hole-filler is particularly bad, or when I happen to buy a better example for other reasons (e.g. because it was very cheap) and decide it is a better fit for that hole.

I think I wouldn't be interested in trying to make a full BU set, but I'd almost surely want to swap out the corroded FR-2 details hole-fillers if/when I can reasonably easily afford something better. Granted, this usually isn't a problem in most US Modern cases (where VG or better examples are almost always reasonably available).

EDIT: essentially what NumisRob said, except that I don't (yet) take trips to USA.

i do, when I can, but it's not an imperative operation. it's when I have nothing better to focus on and I have the money to do so.

I upgraded my Jefferson Dansco regularly during my CRH hunt to fill it.

All of the coins cost 5 cents, and it was an easy call to replace a lower grade coin with a better example.

That said - I downgraded my circulated classic silver commemorative type set to add lower graded coins.

I finally stopped focusing on both sets - and now simply enjoy sharing knowledge with all of you.

I have to admit that if I were to start a second Jefferson set, I would probably do it this way. I might not put any coins in a Dansco until I was satisfied, but I could easy keep the working set in a three ring with 2x2 holders.

I do make upgrades but it depends on my mood. Dimes and halves are easy and I even check my 90% purchases for upgrades. I do this with silver quarters as well. However, with all of the modern quarter series, I usually only pull quarters that are really nice. I don't want to pull out a half a dozen books to put in only slightly less crappy coins.
