This is an established seller Ive bought from which leaves me a little nervous. Ive been wanting a 1884 S Morgan for a decent price/condition but this "4" on the year stamp looks kind of funky to me. Comments please. https://www.ebay.com/itm/316727325110Thank you.

Looks like the 4 took a hit. It's probably a details coin, which is why it's not slabbed. Keep looking.
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

Agree, that 4 looks to have taken a hit.

Definitely taken a hit, you can see the indentation. Would not straight grade in that condition.

That's an EF Details coin. Worth $100 certified as such in plastic. $220 raw is insane. Thank goodness you posted here so we can save you tuition. Time to learn how to grade coins.

Quote:Just curious, why not just buy a slabbed one? https://www.ebay.com/itm/3042386973...ilver+dollar like this one? I understand this one is cleaned but the one you're looking at will most likely be a Details coin. Just a suggestion. Well I wasn't more then 50% on the coin and in no rush. As I was out doing yard work I decided theres just no way I'm going to buy a damaged coin like that. The seller made a mistake by not just admitting it and hoping some sucker would buy it. I bought a few coins from him because he's established and close to me. Thing is he could get close to that money for a '84 S even if he admitted the damage. Other then that its a nice looking fairly rare mintage coin. I'll keep looking for the right coin. A seller that admits to an obvious "cleaned" has my respect for honesty.

Not a bad clean job but theres just not enough metal left and details are sketchy. The Eagles belly feathers most of all and the lettering/numbers. I dont think its an AU-50 but thats just my ignorant opinion. The Obverse kind of saves it and it has a nice rim. Actually maybe it is a 50, I really like the obverse.

Outrageous money for a polished Morgan.
