Nice proof half, agree.... the coin has characteristics of a struck through vs a scratch.

That's quite exciting!
Here's where I was stuck: what was the object? It's too large to be a thread. String seems to show texture. My understanding is that wire stays straight and resists bending. A wood splinter would also be straight.

Very cool! The first thing that popped in my head was a thin rim burr that was not retained.

How about a bristle off a cleaning or buffing brush?
Since the take a lot more care with proofs and put a great deal more time into quality control I can see them periodically buffing the dies with something sturdy enough to remove grit and debris but not likely to scratch the die.
Just spit balling, but it does look like a boars hair or horse hair bristle.

It follows the device edges very well (no skipping) and no moved metal. I'm in the Strike through gang too. |

Where did you find it? It was an ebay pick, spotted while I was hunting bicentennial proof varieties. It looked unusual, so I picked it up. I've been trying to research proof strike-throughs today. I've realized that the typical wispy little squiggles are actually considered struck through lint (not thread). So maybe this is properly a thread. I do like HGK's theory about a horse hair brush bristle. Marve and makecents could also be right with wire or rim burr, respectively. |
