There are two raised marks on the reverse of this 1999-D Delaware State Quarter. The larger one near the top basically looks like a partial letter under the microscope, and the smaller, barely raised one I keep thinking of as a hoof, most likely because it's directly in front of the horse's front feet, & because of its shape. At the right angle, that one also somehow creates this cool optical illusion that there's a second pair of front legs (I'd love to know how if anyone knows?). Would calling either or both of these a die chip be accurate?

@mys, almost all the time die chips are connected with design elements rather than being isolated in the middle of the field like these two spots on your coin. The top one looks very much like a sharp point has been driven into the coin and the displaced metal "smushed" up. Not sure what is going on with the second region, but not a die chip I suspect.

The mark above horses head is a hit mark, note the pushed metal around it. The mark below Rodney and including some letters of Caesar Rodney are from coin rolling machine. The coin has a little grease problem that was on the die when struck showing on E Pluribus Unum, no extra value and is considered normal coin.

Damage on both counts but you do have a partial Grease Filled Die under the date if that's any consolation.

Quote: like a sharp point has been driven into the coin Thanks, that was my first thought, too, because it looks so much like a hole. Under the microscope, though, the "smushed up" area has the same sheen & texture as the letters (& honestly looks like a "J"), but I've never seen one that also has that Indent & figured I'd better ask.
