What am I seeing here? Why is there a large P or D on the reverse of the coin? The obverse side also looks a little strange.

That's called a counterstamp. It's a form of PMD. It does however carry some value to counterstamp collectors.

Question--is that feature raised, or sunken (incuse)? Interesting, yes.

Just punched (hammered) with a letter "P" stamp.

It is not stamped. It is raised.

Are you looking at the actual coin or are you interpreting the picture as raised? If it is raised there would be no reason for the obverse to be flattened if the "P" was not punched into it.

So if raised then some one would have "Welded" a P on top of the coin.
Which raises the question: "What size MIG/TIG wire would have been used and do they make such small diameter copper wire? Would the cent have been distorted from such high heat from the weld wire (Around 2000°F to melt it).
Or a mold was filled with copper looking epoxy/body filler and pushed onto the cents surface.
Either or, it sure does seem like alot of expense and fooling around the get that "P" stuck on the cent!
