I'm sure many folks received the email from the US Mint yesterday morning regarding early news about the Mint's programs for the 250th anniversary of United States independence. Both circulating and coin & medal programs were announced.

Specific to circulating coins:

Quote:

Today, on Independence Day, the U.S. Mint proudly begins the official countdown to the 250th Anniversary of the United States. In 2026, the United States will mark 250 years of independence—and for one year only—our Nation's circulating coins will feature bold new designs to celebrate this historic milestone. Each coin will tell a piece of America's story—its people, ideals, and journey.

This limited-year redesign honors the past while inspiring the future, capturing the spirit of a Nation still in the making. Currently, the Mint is working closely with the Secretary of the Treasury to finalize these designs, which will be shared with the public later this year. Get ready to see history in your hands.

One wonders if the lowly cent will be included in the fanfare. Even if it eventually goes away, I hope it gets to stick around for the celebration!

I'd be more excited about it if we didn't have soooooooooooo many different designs circulating now. In 1975 everybody had been anxiously awaiting the new Bicentennial coins. Besides the introduction of the Ike in 1971, the last design change was in 1964 when they ended the Franklins and introduced the Kennedy half. Now, pretty much every year since 1999 there's been 5 different quarter reverse designs ( I know one year was 6, and another was 2). So not counting minor design changes, or non current designs (buffalo, wheats, V nickels etc that occasionally show up) We have in circulation:
cents, 1 obverse, 6 reverses
nickels 3 obverse, 5 reverses
dimes 1 obverse, 1 reverse
quarters 3 obverses, 130 reverses
halves 1 obverse, 2 reverses
small dollars 22 obverses, 5 reverses (sba, presidential and native american minted for circulation only)

I just don't feel the excitement about a design change like I did back in 1975.

Although I also would like a special one-cent coin next year, I can't see the Mint spending a lot of money for the dies that might only be used a few months.

Yes, I know what they're up to. I might need to stay out of this for a few of those designed coins...
