I'm new to collecting coins and just bought this 2018 D Kennedy half dollar as a missing cloud error coin. It weighs 11.28 grams. Is this an error coin or a plated example? thank you in advance for your input.

Weight should be 11. 25 so perhaps it's just stained or environmental toning. Just a guess, but I'm sure the experts will have a better answer or opinion.

If it was missing the clad, it would be lighter.
That is the correct weight for a regular 50 cent coin.
Also it would be copper colour with a weaker strike.
What you have is environmental toning.

Weight is pretty much on point. I'm thinking environmental toning. A missing clad layer error would be lighter in weight. I'd get your money back. You got ripped off unfortunately. https://www.pcgs.com/news/missing-c...-error-coins

Thx for adding that edge picture. Since the normal strip composition is two layers of clad sandwiching a copper layer, your coin would have to be missing *both* clad sides. That is highly unlikely but not impossible. However, in that case, the thickness would be greatly reduced and the resulting coin would have weak details and be severely underweight. Since yours has neither of these characteristics, it must be something else besides a mint error: either plated or environmentally/chemically toned. As noted by @e&v, you should try to get your money back.

This looks like an example of an 'Improperly Annealed/Sintered Planchet' Mint Error.
