Well, at least that's what I first thought when I picked this up yesterday.

I've seen many varieties of the "D" mint mark on 1969 Lincoln cents over the years. This one really caught my eye. With a little imagination, the "D" looks a lot like an "O."

The mint mark shows a contact mark, it's taken a hit and damaged.

A hit on the mint mark caused it to look like an O.

Well ... maybe with a lot of imagination or Doc's help from "Back to the Future".

nice find - I didn't N'orleans made a cent that year..

Yeah, it would have been quite a feat, as in 1969 the mint was (and still is) a museum. But you never know, a mint employee could have surreptitiously kept a key when the mint closed in 1909 and given it to their kid. The key was handed down over the years. Then in 1969, the kin is now working as a museum guard. They work late one night and, after everyone else has gone home, unlock the secret door to a large room that holds a number of coin dies, including the 1909 LHC. The guard fashions a 1969 date for the die and, as a cherry on top, punches an "O" mint mark. (They use ESP to know that in 1969, the reverse will feature the Lincoln Memorial and strike accordingly.)

So as not to be found out (like those dweebs who made the 1913 Liberty Head nickels), they make only one coin. After cleaning up, they lock the door and steal away under cover of night. The next day, the guard gives it to their daughter who uses it to buy a dish of ice cream. And lo these many years later, it surfaces in change and the guy who found it writes about it on the coin community forum. Could have happened!
