@hank, in addition to the two excellent links that @bobby provided, I would add that your coin is pretty heavily circulated, and that can cause the rim and tops of the letters to start to merge.

Several thing going on here, first, the 'L' on the rim is normal for these years. then there is Die Deterioration going on which normally trends towards the rim, and the excessive wear of the coin and reduced rim is encroaching in on the fields.
