Can someone shed some light on this? I have a 1982p with missing initials FG.

Somewhat common, I can't remember if it is caused by an over polished die or a Grease Filled Die. John1

John1 hit it on the head. The reason the FG could not be missing is that the entire reverse is on the master die. Nothing was added like in the case of hand punched mint marks prior to 1989. So the FG was either polished out or filled with something on the die before striking. I've found one and then found out what really happened. I've still got it somewhere and I think it is the same year as yours.

I have not found a single one of them after 10 boxes of halves, are they only present in philly coins? (85% of the coins I search are D mint.)

The page says it was updated November 11, 2006. I thought so.

Thanks for the info. I saw one yesterday on ebay "NGC MS65 MISSING FG" sold for $54.00. So I decided to look at all of my 82p's and found one .
