I recently looked in my coin collection after last looking about 30 years ago. I was reading about errors in the 2024 Red Book and that made me search the Internet, which lead me to this site. I decided to get out the error coins I stashed away after my mother gave them to me. I had forgotten what I had.

This one has been sitting in my coin box since 1964 when my mother brought it home from the bank she worked at. Obviously she replaced it with the same face value coin before taking it. I remember thinking back then that the coin was ruined and worthless, not knowing what I know now.

I took the photos trying to show the damage 180 degrees across from each clip, after reading about that ? Effect which proves the clips are genuine. I can see it on both the side view and face on views.

Are any other photos needed to document the coin better?

The Blakesley Effect is caused by the missing metal rolling awkwardly through the upset mill rails. The result is a poorly formed rim opposite the clip. The effect seems strongest on smaller clips, probably because the planchet is still held somewhat firmly by the upset mill.

The Smith Effect is the curved, pointy rim edges approaching the gap.

It's a big clip, and extra nice on an uncirculated 90% silver Kennedy half. Your mom brought you something pretty cool 61 years ago!

It seems that clips on larger coins are less common.

I weighed this coin yesterday and got 11.202 grams. That works out to 8-12% by weight missing, depending on the original weight of the coin.

I suppose the official mid point of the weight range is used to make this calculation, so would this coin then be called a 10% clip?
