Hey I came across this coin. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
1983 Small date/weight 2.5/ Denver
But, what is goin on with the Mint mark? It looks like a "D" buried in the hole.
Also what is behind the '8'?
Wish the coin was in better condition.

There are no large/small date varieties for 1983.That's all just zinc corrosion. It often starts around the mintmark where the plating splits.

It is not an error of any kind. There is no way for that to
happen when the coin was struck. Looks like a plating bubble
that has burst exposing the zinc core.

Sm/Lrg date? Sorry about that. I was organizing/looking at 1982 when I came across that one. KIDS demanded attention...

I was thinking rot, for you can see it around the 'D" mintmark. Its a hole around the mint mark which the mint mark is in the hole.

Im gonna post a close up of the hole. Also, the weird crazy image of the 8 in the date. For to me it looks like the date was stamped over it.

Just from the zinc corrosion. The odd piece in the 8 is just a piece of the copper plating loosened from the zinc corrosion underneath.
