Recently, I acquired a 1 Real coin which is among the earliest coins made in the New World. Looks like the 1st coin type. The first coins struck in the New World were made at the initial Mexico City Mint which was located in the home of Spanish conquistador of Mexico Hernan Cortes. Smaller denominations were made initially in 1536 and the larger 4 reales and the extremely rare 8 reales coins were made in 1537 and early 1538. This was 44 years after Columbus landed in the New World in 1492. Cortes conquered Mexico in 1519 by defeating Aztec Emperor Moctezuma Xocoyotzin. This was the early precursor of U.S. coinage. Mexico City mint; Francisco del Rincón, assayer. Struck 1536-1538. Crowned coat-of-arms / Crowned Pillars of Hercules; PLVSVL in oval lozenge at center. Calico-60. PCGS VF25. Thank you to all for you kind comments. I was able to garner from research by Cori Sedwick Downing that there are about 50 examples of this coin known.
