What is the first Eisenhower dollar to start a collection with to get it out of the way first?

I suggest it's the first one you find affordable for your budget.

This should not be a hard effort as these common date circulation strike Ike's are available at little over face value.

If you're going to use a Dansco with proofs, I'd say 1973S silver proof (lowest mintage). If you're gonna include the three varieties of 1972P, then go for the 1972P type 2 first.

"Get it out of the way"? - probably just go to your local banks and see if they have any they will sell you for face value!

nickelsearcher, ratman4762, Marve65.. Thank you very much for your replies, guys!
When I say, "get it out of the way", the most costly and difficult one to buy, something that I can not find at the bank...
From ratman4762 reply, it appears to be the "1973S silver proof", followed by the "Three varieties of 1972P", then the "1972P type 2"...
Thanks!

IMO the 72P type 2 will be harder to find in higher grades than the 73S proof.
So if you're looking for all your Ikes to be similar grades..search for both and pull the trigger when you Know you're getting a good deal. Remember the Mint has made more than just 1.

The Ike collection is an easy collection to assemble, most of them are very affordable to get, But the Key coin to have would be the 1972 Philly type 2 dollar will be a bit pricey - get that one out of the way and the rest is easy driving..

Then ratman has your answer.

And for what it is worth, the 1972 V3 was the last one I bought—two months after the way more expensive V2.

You didn't say whether the collection was graded or not. For any Ike collection, I think the 1972 Type 2 proof reverse is the key coin, particularly if you want it in certified mint state.

A few others like the 1973-S can be a bit more expensive than the other coins, but by definition you'll be getting an uncirculated coin.

If you are aiming for the highest grades possible in certified slabs, I think there are Ikes that get rare and expensive but only at gem grades. You can see that price spike on the PCGS price grids.

Brand is correct regarding a graded set. My 1973-S 40% proof is the ninth most expensive Ike in that set.

Number one is the 1972 Variety 2.

Number two is the 1978-D.

YMMV.

Just look at it!

Going from MS-65 to MS-66 with Ikes usually rates a good premium. I bought this one from Darth Morgan for a good price, but still a lot more than an MS-65 would have cost me.

Thank you all for your inputs...
Looks like I'd better finish what I have started before tackling the Ike's...
But, will still be looking just in case with my trigger finger set...
Again, thank you for your advice...

Daniel Carr also made more Ike overstrikes as well.

Hi Lee, good seeing you here....
Sent you a CCF message yesterday. Did you get it?
I have a few Daniel Carr coin tokens, but nothing with President Eisenhower on them.. Are those small ones Susan B. Anthony overstrikes?

Yes, you can still see the outlines of Susan B.'s bun in front of Eisenhower's face.
