I have been puzzled by this particular RPM for a while. As far as repunched mint marks go, it is weak tea, barely visible. 1964 was a peak year for minting nickels with over a billion struck. So why the heck is the 1964-D/D nickel FS-501 so shockingly expensive? If you look at the PCGS plate coins, I'm not even sure that some of them are even RPMs at all, but they trade hands for hundreds of dollars. What am I missing here?

I find it particularly bizarre because there is also a D-over-inverted-D for 1964 that is way stronger and more visually interesting, and that coin apparently gets no regard whatsoever.

I don't know why, but that's strange for sure.

Rarity, maybe? Or, we could go back the that "powers that be", concept we discussed in another thread.

Gee!!
Now I need to double check my 64'S
I've seen so many MD, D's, that I don't give them a second look!

Die Deterioration was very common that year. In looking at the D/D examples, if you told me that they were MD or DDD, I would probably not give it a second thought.

Also odd that there do not seem to be confirmation markers, and no WRPM is listed on Wexler.

Just saying. Do you remember? I can find it if need be.
