I only first heard about the Attached 6 variety of the 1996 nickel two weeks and came across this whole roll hunting today. Is this an Attached 6? It's not in the greatest shape but seems to be rather rare? Any idea of value?
Quote: There are near and far 6 varieties of the 1996 nickel, defined by the space between the tail of the 6 and the D of CANADA. All Proof sets, Specimen sets and pliofilm UNC mint sets contain the near 6 variety, but both varieties can be found in regular circulation strike coins.
The attached six is the result of a well located die chip. Technically not a variety but someone gives it a fancy name and now it is collectible. If that chip was 1/8" to either side it would be just a regular die chip. It reminds me of the bugtail nickel which is just another die chip with a fancy name.
The way coin dies are made, every coin from a specific set of dies will show the EXACT same details as every other coin from that set of dies.
A (maybe too simplistic) way of looking at it is a round cookie cutter will always make perfectly identical sized round cookies with no variance at all.
Yours does not match either picture shown and hence is likely a a die chip
