I don't like the denticles; I feel there should be more of a delineation between the roots of the denticles and the rest of the rim. At very best, if original, this one's been polished and doesn't retain much value.
Steer clear, if you've been considering it.

There's always a chance, even if small...when you purchase from an auction without seeing coin in hand. It's not an especially rare date with over 4 million minted. I didn't think it looked suspicious.

There are a lot of copies on ebay right now, but that looks original to me. I certainly no expert though. I do agree with SuperDave about it being polished though. JMHO

Good advice; thanks. The pickup site is too far away for me to drive there and inspect; and then drive back to pick it up (or pay a premium to have it shipped to me). And then the auction house, while legit (our school district will be using them to dispose of surplus equipment), offers no guarantee. You're right - I'll pass.

It looks pretty close to real IMO, and the denticles might look like that after the coin has worn to its current EF40 (or so) grade. I still wouldn't trust it unless it came with an iron-clad guarantee (and I wasn't bothered by the cleaning!). There are lots of mid-grade Trade dollars in PCGS, NGC, ANACS, and ICG holders. I'd hold out for one of those.

In my opinion, it's fake. The L's are identical, copied one to the other, both lined up dead with the front corner of the headpiece, look at the area I've circled.....

All right. So now we let the guy who is in the lead @ $75.00 get messed up? Do we inform Purple Wave that they're selling a counterfeit "coin"? What should be done now? I do feel obligated to right a wrong here. Oh, and there are other coins from the same estate in this auction, if anyone else knowledgeable wants to follow up on them via the link I posted.

Nice diagram Bobby. I might add that the bottom end of the "LIBERTY" banner (I guess you would call it that) doesn't line up the same. On the authentic one, the "L" in LIBERTY is bisected by the right portion of your L drawn in, while it's outside the box on the fake one.
That's a very useful tool though. Thanks for sharing!

I have to admit I was going to say I thought it was real, but Bobby's diagram has given me reason to question it. I like that trick, I've never seen it before.
