My best guess that it is a piece that came off a previously Minted coin which got pressed into the subject coin! I state this because it doesn't look like a Die Gouge!

Thanks huntsman. I guess you're the only one that wants to offer an opinion.

Can't really tell from the image. It could be damage from a hit. If it were a die gouge it would be raised from the coin. If is is sunk into the coin, then it is damage.

Sorry coop, I'll try for a better image. The line is raised above the ear, definately not post mint damage.

Looks raised to me. I'm calling it a die gouge.

Yeah, it looks a lot different in the last pics and based on them, I would normally have to say Die Gouge! However, I am still not totally convinced that it is a Die Gouge as it sure didn't look like a Die Gouge in the first pic! Could you take a close-up of the entire ear and post it? A close-up may reveal it's true character! I did copy and paste the original pic to my' PC and increase the size 200% and it really looks like it is pressed into the coin and not the result of a Die Gouge.

It is raised. But in order to be raised like that it a gouge would have to be deeper than the devices themselves. Maybe the die was damaged? Other than a gas bubble I can't picture anything raised more than the deeper devices of a die?

I would keep it to see if anyone else finds one. Or another explanation is considered. Easier to keep her than letting it go and never find it again.

Yes! Although the coin has little if any value over one cent, it is a keeper as it can be conversation piece!

The latest pic doesn't help much but I still say that it appears to be debris from another Cent that got struck (pressed) into the coin! I say this because it appears to be laying on top of the details and has not become a part (damaged part) of the details which would be the case with a Die Gouge.
