I happened upon this 1830 Bust Half with some pretty clear diagnostics it would seem on the obverse. Don't find any matches for this at NGC varieties. I would guess that would suggest it's a counterfeit, but did they put lettered edging on counterfeits? An angle view of the coin appears to show lettering.

It looks like a genuine O-116. I suspect the raised lumps on the obverse were made post-strike.

Yes, my issue with it is those "bits" look the same age as the coin with similar wear. So to me it looks like they were there when the coin was made.

There's a lot of old damage elsewhere on the obverse of the coin, including a similar abnormality at around 9:00. Is there any sign of a dig at any of those spots that could have pushed up some metal? The damage could have occurred in the late 1830's, allowing it to age the same as the rest of the coin.

There is a sign of a dig around the mouth, but where I put the green arrows there is no metal disturbance that I can see. You do have me questioning the image and lighting. This is a coin for sale, I don't have it in hand. Perhaps it just looks like added bits but are actually digs.

That would be my guess.

Looks real to me, but I am not an expert on detecting counterfeits.

Thank you for posting up this coin and your question. I'm not well versed in these older coins and I love to learn more about them.

Yeah @jpbuck I like that look on old silver, it's what drew my attention to it. Looks like an original trooper.

The raised lumps look too big to me merely metal pushed out of a gouge - it would need to be a very deep gouge to extract that much metal. In conjunction with those odd parallel scratches all the way across the face of the obverse, the whole effect makes me think we're looking at a removed mount mark.
