Not a DDO or deterioration, that is Machine Doubling, another of the worthless types of doubling. Nice pictures by the way to clearly show the MD.

Step-like doubling that serves to reduce the width of devices is going to be Machine Doubling every time.

Quote: Just don't quite have that eye yet Maybe the below pictorial comparison will help. On the left is the number 9 from your coin while on the right is the same number, sized as identically as I can, on the DDO from the VarietyVista website. On yours, the overall width of the number (distance from bottom red arrow to black arrow is roughly constant across the entirety of the number whereas on the DDO that width is exaggerated between the bottom red arrow and the black arrow. In that same region, the distance between the two red arrows is reduced for your coin, but constant for the DDO. Can you see that? A second indicator is that the DDO has a split serif on the number 9 (encircled in red) which your coin's number 9 lacks.

The best way to learn to distinguish MD, DDD, and doubled dies is to look at lots and lots and lots of coins of that particular type. Even then, there are quite a number of genuine doubled dies that present as MD because the misaligned hubbing is shallow. Always check the listings on all available sites.

Spence. Vey helpful usually tend to think of coins this old as a bit beat up so if I see similarities I start wondering... But the top.of the 9 and the losing width and the serif are really good examples to go guide... thanks

That is a great example and description of MD vs DD.
Just remember that MD will reduced in size the devices, on incuse devices, they will be enlarged.

Think that your right on point brandmeister.. I jump from yr to denomination to series with not enough time dedicated to learning any particular series of coins in great enough detail.
