I came across this quarter while inspecting my collection. The eye appeal looks really nice, one can see something is a bit different. Here are some closeup photos of the quarter, plus full shots. I have not come across one like this before. Is this a strike through, a deteriorated die? Please provide your expertise observation and let me know what you all think.

The amount of radial flow and that die crack on the wing suggest a business strike to me. The reflectiveness of the fields at an angle should tell you a lot about MS vs SMS.

Given the posted photos, appears to be struck using rather deteriorated dies. Pretty neat.

Looks like a Business Strike. What you're seeing is called Die Deterioration.

I agree--those heavy flow lines mean that this coin was struck by a tired die.

Having looked at quite a few proof nickels and SMS nickels, I did want to mention something that isn't mentioned often here. Those high pressure strikes often have feathery radial lines just inside the rim. I believe that's because the delicate lettering prevented the Mint techs from re-polishing that narrow part of the fields when they buff up the main coin fields. Those lines can appear quite strongly in axial photos.

I do think this is a business strike, though. Just wanted to mention that.
