Does anyone else think that this coin may be a counterfeit? Contemporary? All of the fields and devices are somewhat granular in appearance like it was cast. There is still a lot of crud around the devices that make it look worse in the pictures than it actually is.

I can try and get better pictures later if needed.

Thank you!

I don't think that it's cast - there's no seam or sprue mark, and the fine details are distinct. Rather it seems to be suffering from environmental damage.
What is the weight?
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

Except for the crud, it looks good to me.
Try soaking in pure acetone for 24 hours and see if it comes off.

Looks like just crud with a bit of corrosion - but authentic.

Thanks everyone! According to my scale it weighs 5.9 grams. It has been in acetone for a few days, the crud is still there. Thanks again!

at the bottom range of the weight, but to be expected with the wear and loss of metal due to corrosion.

I agree with the upthread comments: a decent genuine coin, with pretty common environmental damage. When you are done with the acetone soak, be sure to rinse the coin thoroughly with distilled water. I'll let others weigh in on whether VERDI-CARE might help here.

I would keep it away from water for fear of activating the verdigris. Nice coin. Best to leave it alone.

Thanks everyone! I probably won't do too much more with it, and will mostly leave it as is. I may do another round of acetone though.

Thank you!
