Went to put it in a capsule but it would have pushed the lid back off. Seriously though, what am I looking at here?

Lamination just seems improbable. How could it have significant wear and stay retained like that? So; boredom and a pair of pliers? Perhaps the former led to the latter?

Interesting keeper either way!

Edited title to state lamination, as I doubt anyone is here for springs

Absolutely a lamination - and a very interesting one indeed!
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

Nice Lamination! Maybe someone used pliers to lift it up?

WOW!

Maybe it finally got caught on a thread in someone's pocket and got pulled out?

Hondo, Errers, snailking, thank you!

I was having a hard time believing my eyes... I picked it raw from a bulk bin like this.

Crazy good lamination error.
Could have been in a collection until a recent coin dump and you were lucky enough to be the one to "Re-Find" it.

It's a lamination for sure. Might have had some human assistance to become so peeled up, though we'll never know.

Nice find.

Excellent lam! You would appear to have an RPM too but could not find a solid match. Here are the links if you want to look. I've marked your up, showing the splits.

Thank you, everyone!

Marv65, I'm sure you're right, there's no way this was "in the wild" all that time.

-makecents-, great eye, I missed that!

It likely did not leave the mint like it. Wear and tear probably worked on the planchet flaw, eventually resulting in this.

Oriole, indeed, something had to have popped it after it saw years of circulation.

Now, were it MS, that would be something else entirely!

I must say, that thin layer of metal is much more rigid and durable than I'd expected. You won't see me pick at it, but it's pretty stable.
