This came from the same lot of coins that I purchased a couple years back, from a friend. Looks like a metal detector find or something. Errers and Varietys.

I would grade that one at ABU - All Beat Up!
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

You might try paper and pencil etching to get the date. That one is in pretty tough condition, but I have seen it work on a coin in similar shape. Try a light etching and a hard etching, all it will cost is a scrap piece of paper and a little lead.

Quote:that poor, poor thing beyond redemption. realistic grade = 'nwyt' (not worth your time). stick it in a roll of zincolns and send it back to the bank. i am reminded of the old adage "time is treasure; spend it wisely". the older I get, the more I am aware of the inherent truth of this saying. if I am going to spend time playing with coins, it is going to be by helping to preserve the worthy ones for future generations to enjoy; not fussing over those long past their 'save-by' date. your opinion may vary. go ahead and roast me.. I could use the warmth these late winter days.

I'm going to probably hang on to it for now. Maybe I'll give it to someone for free. I'm not going to bother trying to conserve it or anything. It's just too far gone. That piece--at one time--likely had a rather prolonged subterranean adventure....

I'm going to mail it to a member for free of charge. Maybe he can pass it on to a kid, or a person, and maybe get them into this hobby. It'll make a good conversation piece. Worth 1 cent I know, but it's still an IHC.
