I'm in the process of assessing a neighbor's collection that he inherited from his father. All coins are raw as this was assembled back in the 1960s or so. My photo set up isn't great, especially for shiny, uncirculated coins so these are the best that I can do.

I'm interested in opinions from the hive here as to grade as well as any potential issues which might result in a details designation should he send them in for slabbing. Thx!

Here is an 1909 S Cent:

I'd say another VG10 - not sure if the scratch will detail it or not seeing it's the 09-S.

I think this is likely heading for a Details grade given the long gouge located in a very prominent position on the obverse portrait.

It could also benefit from a Verdicare treatment to stabilize the green crud, particularly on the reverse.

i'll give it VG8 the reverse is stronger. the scratch would most likely detail the coin especially if it had been a little higher grade. at VG8 its borderline.

its a $300 coin if it graded straight. however the coin would be devalued due to the eye appeal and scratch. if the coin detailed then probably half that. I dont think its worth slabbing and would find some verdicare that would help stabilize the coin then place it in an airtite. you other choice is pay the grading fees and pay for conservation but its going to chew up most of the value. based on what I have been seeing lately I would only go with PCGS. subscription fee $69, grading fee $23, plus ship and ins both ways plus conservation. as you can see not much would be left and if it came back details you would lose almost all of the value

VG-10 details, scratch and environmental damage. Still a nice hole filler.
