Hi,
I am new to this site and new to collecting. I have a Washington quarter that looks like it has a dime plancet error. I would appreciate any help I can get on identifying if this is an error coin or not.

Thanks much!

Hi Erratic1

Welcome to the Forum !!

My first inclination is that the quarter has been damaged post mint.

Lets see what others think ,and I will study the pics a bit more .

I would say something like that would have to be post mint but quarters arent my strong point but I have never seen anything from the mint that would cause something like that so I would just have to agree with metalman and wait to see what others say also along side of him

Definitely post-mint damage. At the time a circle like that could possibly have been cut into the coin, it would still have been in the sheet, which would definitely be before the strike. Your circle was cut into your coin after the strike. There is no machinery at the mint that would do something like this after the coin is struck.
