Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas on the best way to keep track of what they have. My collection is starting to get a little large and I can't quite keep remembering everything in my head (Even though I try!!!). Any types of software or your own unique way? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!!!

I use excel or you can use this site and upload your coins up there. http://www.omnicoin.com At the same time, you can use that site to show your collection to others. :)

I don't use any special coin software. I use excell to keep track of all of my stuff I make different spread sheet for each type of coin I collect. I have found this to be the easiest for me just to make up different files. All the coin software I know cost so I have not tried them so the ones that do use one of these may have a different opion. I as well use Omnicoin but I just list a small amount of my coins mainly security issues

I know alot of folks use the types of things listed above,, and although I have several thousand coins, my personal collection totals only a few hundred that once entered never leave.
I simply take a pic, add grading details, store the info on a floppy disc. enter the coin onto a spreed sheet and make a hard copy.
I forgot to mention but this is also the place to add Identifying characteristics,, no two coins are ever really Identical !!
its not pretty or high tech, but it gets the job done.

My method is about as low-tech as you can go in a high-tech world.
I use my computer and list the coins, along with condition.
I then run off a hard copy and file it away.

I just use Excel, both for an inventory and a want list. I've been thinking of making up an Access database so I can include pictures, just haven't gotten around to it (of course you can always insert pictures in Excel too). What did you finally come up with?

I was thinking also of taking pictures of all with the name/year/condition of each, downloading them to my computer and then burn a CD with them all listed and then add new ones whenever I purchase one.

I've put mine into 2x2's and then bought a bunch of plastic sleeves made especially for the coins. Locally I can get them for about .65 each but I'm sure the internet has them cheaper. I only use the 2x2's because of the cost and the hundreds of coins that I have. Each denomination has it's own book - much like many coin shops do. I too am using an Excel spreadsheet showing: Type (Cent, etc.), Mint, Grade, Purchase Price/Trade Price, Current Red Book and sometimes Retail Price and then I make notes for Key Dates, errors, etc. I would like to list all dates, but a Want List will suffice for now. There are some great programs for collectors that offer lots of details for each coin. I use one for reference only at this point. Photos are an excellent idea for insurance purposes. I hope this helps!

You're supposed to organize? Oh stuff!! (ha, beat the automatic censor to it) I have a few on my computer but for the most part, I just put them in flips and then coin boxes. Sorted of course by denomination. Never gave a spread sheet much thought as I spend too much time looking at coins, reading about coins and trying to figure how to GET more coins. Then there is work, oh yeah, and laundry. Ya'll are light years ahead of me. Margaret

Margaret - you're great! I had to laugh. Yes, organizing does get in the way of looking at them, reading about them and getting them! Oh and yes, it get's in the way of "other" things ie: laundry and life! I'm putting mine on the spreadsheets now and can't wait until that's done!!!!!!!!!!!

Here's a previous thread on discussing databases etc. In my post there on February 1, I said I was up to "Greece" in my database updating project. It's now May 6th and I'm happy to report I'm currently up to "Manchukuo".

Congrats Sap! You've come a long way! Keeping records at home IS important. My problem is that when I go "shopping" I aim for a particular coin, but when I get there (on-line/shop/private sale) I see other coins and then I can't remember what dates I need or which coins I'm searching for in better Grades. My wish list is just too long...I don't like to look obvious. I'm looking for a smaller notepad, index card or something so that I can just glance at it for quick reference. No I don't have a palm pilot or anything. It would have to be a paper version. Any ideas?

Sap..thanks for that link, I didnt realize there was a previous thread for this. So far, I have started using excel to keep track. Someone had given me Collectors Assistant Plus as a gift, but I don' think its too user friendly. I want to change it over to Access, but I am not too familiar with it so I am looking at taking a class on it.
Thanks everyone for all your suggestions!
Dsking, as for a list that you can carry with you...I keep my want list on a simple sheet of 8x11 paper and carry it with me everywhere.
