OK, I inheirited a Walking Liberty 50 cent Whitman Album from my Father-In-Law, that is filled except for the usual key dates. All the coins are VG to VF. But being in this folder for 40+ years has toned the coins an ugly dark color (especially the Reverse) Also being in a smoke filled house did not help! I have taken one coin at a time and carried in my pants and rubbed it occasionaly. Or I will take a coin and rub with my fingers for 5-10 minutes. I am not cleaning the coin per se. I am merely circulating it for a short period of time. The grade cannot change, only the appearance. Do you folks agree with this? Should I keep them in the ugly cigarette toned condition or "re-circulate" it briefly. Is this cleaning? They look better to me! I would never do this with a 21-D or S or 1938-D, only the common ones in the album. Photos: Obverse Before and After: Reverse Before and After: Edited by JayDon62 06/21/2009 5:53 pm

The blue Whitman folders are notorious for "striping" coins as shown. I have no problem with what your doing. Just never clean any coin. Period. Never rub with a rag either. Your fingers (skin) and pocket carry should not harm the coins giving they are carried alone. I'm sure others will have another opinion. This is just mine ;-)

I agree that the coins do look alot better! I disagree that you can't change their grade. Since coins are graded by circulation wear, any additional circulation could possibly knock a coin that barely makes one grade down a grade! But probably not in your case.

Well I agree that you are wearing them and indeed reduce the grade (see above posters) but its "honest wear" and seems to have done some good.
One warning - don't rub too hard or you risk hairlining. Under hi mag it could get you in trouble at resale.

AHHH I see where ya getting at...well...if you had to clean that place out with the yellow/brown nicotined walls, ceilings, rugs , furniture-- the stench of decades of cigarette smoke, you would know what I mean! Nasty ain't the word!
I had to toss the Whitman folders out. If I gave you a half or dollar coin and told you to put it to your nose and smell, you would understand and not be so ignorant.
Cheers Mate!

....then you've done the right thing by them. We're not talking about huge value here, and the difference in subjective appeal is big.

Enough. This is a place where we don't allow the trading of insults, and it takes two to fight. There's no reason for either of you to have let it get to this point.
