In addition to the sacred "Error Box" that the Double-Struck Liberty nickel I posted awhile back came out of, the shop that I work at has a "Counterfeit" box which also makes some appearances throughout the year. When He got it out the other day, these two coins were brought to my attention. The first is a 1916-S Buffalo nickel. I might add that for both of these coins, I am not of the firm opinion that they are counterfeit.

This coin looks pretty normal to me.. the date seems to match others of the same date and having looked at several thousand Buffaloes over the last month (again ) the surfaces look fine to me. The only possibly strange mark runs from the rim through the middle feather, looks like a die gouge to me that is being misdiagnosed as a "tooling mark" that is common to many counterfeit coins. The reverse Looks fine to me- If that is an added Mint Mark it is darn good, and in this condition a waste of time IMO ! I will start with the only area (as far as I am concerned) that is questionable on the Obverse.
All opinions appreciated, thanks for looking !

EDIT: Sorry...coin weighs in at 4.9g

At the risk of overloading this post with several more pics of the other coin, I am going to post it separately and try to remember to bump this to be first.

Edit...be first !

This looks fine to me. Just a gouge on the OBV. I've seen far, far worse.

Looks like a small die break or crack to me.

This coin is a well known counterfeit amongst us older buffalo nuts (I hate to date myself) but I will in this case. There were a couple of different obverse and reverse dies used by this counterfeiter dated 1916-s. The craftsmanship is similar enough to acertain that they were produced by the same technician. The obvere die shown here is fairly close in profile to a normal coin. These fakes are so good that one was even slabbed by one of the current coin grading services. Check out the contour of the bisons front legs which are kind of off. All in all a good job of counterfeiting. It has become an interesting collectible in its own right.

Buffnixx, if this is counterfeit, what did they do, take a 1916 legit coin and add the "S", or are you saying the entire coin is counterfeited?

The entire coin is a counterfeit, both obverse and reverse dies. I have four or five of these I have accumulated over the years. There at least two different obverse and reverse dies. The second pair of dies I think was the fakers attempt to "get it right". The first pair of dies had a bison that looked like it was anorexic, ie, on a starvation diet. And the Indian did not really look like the Indian we know but just a distant cousin. The profile, while similar, was markedly different. the second set of dies had a better looking Indian and a buffalo closer in appearnace to the real one. Another thing I have noticed is that these coins, when they do turn up, are usually in grades of fine or below. I have never seen a very fine or higher graded specimen. They are probably the most common of the counterfeit Buffalo nickels. Much rarer are the 1935 and 1936 two legged buffaloes.
