I picked this coin up at the Long Beach coin and collectibles expo awhile back. It was a raw coin and had a stronger strike than most other examples I saw at the show. I later sent it to NGC for grading and authentication. The photos are taken through the slab. What grade do you think they assigned?

Very nice looking coin, I think it graded MS-64.

You're going to hate me for this. AU58 to MS62 Tail feathers weak, also hair lines. I hope I'm wrong because pictures can lie.

Pocono Pete is pretty close on this one!

1932-S-Quarter,-NGC-Graded

This coin has an interesting grading history. I remember the dealer told me he had broken the coin out of a PCGS MS-62 slab and was going to re-submit it since he thought it had been undergraded. I bought the raw coin and submitted it to SEGS at the show (they had a grading special for $10 per coin; seemed like a bargain!). The SEGS grade was just MS-60! I broke it out and tried NGC and got the MS-61.

I'm not sure why they were so hard on this coin. The tailfeathers may be a bit weak but the obverse has a stronger-than-usual strike IMO, based on my inspection of quite a few mint state 1932-S quarters. Luster is strong and the contact marks are minimal. The dark line in front of George appears to be a toning streak, not a scratch. The eye appeal seems comparable to that of some MS-63 and MS-64 slabbed examples I've seen.

Very sweet year to have for the Quarter, I also think you did well by receiving the MS61 you were assigned. I also do not see that PCGS would of given this an MS62, just my opinion, I do not think the strike is that "strong", I have seen some weaker and some stronger, I would be glad to have this coin in my collection....

That's a huge strike for this date, however, I did not attempt to grade because the coin was shown through a scratched slab. BTW, nice coin!
