Playing with the scanner and pulled this out. I think I got the color pretty well on it.

I find the 89 reverse very interesting and I have some questions. I see the circular line above STATES and assume this is caused by the collar. The line is tilted as it goes around the strike because I assume the force of the strike tilted the collar. But I heard before that the collar's inside diameter is about .005" bigger than the anvil die that it goes around. The distance from the edge of the die to the collar appears to be a lot larger than .005" on this coin. Is that a result of the collar tilting or is the .005" number wrong? Also as the collar strike comes around it appears to show the width of the collar as it exits the coin. Is this how thick the collar really is?

I don't know if you can see five thousands of an inch. Can't answer the question completely but I think you're on the right tract. If I play with my scanner will I pull something like that out?

It could be part of the collar touching that area. that would be the only thing circular in that area. (Other than the die of course) Just don't know to say for sure. The areas stongest affected is on the edges of the new circle which may have taken part of the strike?

Thanks Rockdude and Coop. I don't know where I heard about the .005". I just remember reading this somewhere and the machinist blood in me caused the number to stick. Maybe I remembered the number wrong or the information was just wrong. I certainly wouldn't swear by it. But if you look at the fins we have seen in the past and think about the fin thickness is created from metal flowing between the die and the collar then this number seams plausible. As metal flows between the die and collar I would think it would pull the collar against the die 180 degrees oposite the flow and the thickness of the fin would be twice the clearance of the collar to the die. Using the .005" this would make a fin about .010" max. The fins I have seen in the past are very thin and I think they would support a small clearance like this.

Clembo and Jasper, sorry for taking your post and driving it this far. The photo of Jasper's oc just brought these questions to my mind and I thought here is the best place to explore it. Thanks for posting the great photos of your coins. Let's see what everyone thinks and maybe someone can get in touch with Mike to see how far off base I am.
