I thought I would share the fact that I found some very nice dbld thumbs, clashed dies etc from only this dated original U S Mint box, I decided to open some, had some friends and relatives order some for me total( 25) boxes and did not open many just 3 and the 1st box was dated the 4-20-09 and found the errors, the 2nd was dated 4-16-09 and found nothing but some shiny nice Cents, the 3rd was also dated the 4-20-09 and found the exact same dbld thumb and some variances of the same, also more (obv) clashed dies.

I never thought I would open ANY of the Mint wrapped rolls, took a shot and glad I did, be well, Mike

Interesting... I purchased to sets from the mint and both are dated 4/20.... I should probably sell one of the sets on this forum.

Coop, as usual very sweet pictures, I have most of these from the stated 2-rolls from 4-20-09, I also found, that I do not see, are many clashed dies under Abe's jaw, along the neck, any chance for an overlay, or help me learn how to do the same, Thanks, Mike

daviscfad: The overlays are the position where the two dies would clash together when there is no planchet between the dies. Th obverse makes a copy of the edges of the devices on the fields. So when this happens, the two fields from both dies touch and leaving an impression from each die on the other. so where the fields are on the coins struck after that happens the marks appear on the opposite die. On the LP2 ones there is a mark under the law area and on the neck of the reverse die. It is only an outline, but sometimes the clashes are extremely hard. The lower and mid devices are very strongly seen. I have an example of this from a Nickel clash you might enjoy. I've included clash outlines so you can compare them.
Obverse:
U-S-Mint-Rolls-Of-The-Lp2-Dated-April-20th
Reverse:
U-S-Mint-Rolls-Of-The-Lp2-Dated-April-20th
Usually only the outline of some devices appear. But this is the only one where you can see the letters/numbers even visible.

So by having the overlay, you can see where the fields meet the devices. These areas are affected. Usually only one area is clashed, but not always. Sometimes you see a doubled outline when the dies bounce. After a clash, the dies are polished to remove the clash marks. The few coin struck after the clash will have the clash effects.

Steve, The date you speak of, for me, was a wash out, 4-16-09 nothing but nice new cents( like that is bad, LOL ) Not to say your luck won't be better, good luck, Mike

PS: I am going to check some rolls from the Indiana release date-5-14-09, ALL N.F. String and Son rolls, But who knows....

Coop, That Nickel is one of the sweetest clashes I have ever seen, if not the nicest, Did you find it or buy it?

Wow coop I must say that is unbelievable. Die clashes don't really do much for me but yours is a horse of a different color. Now that is a real keeper. Would you venture a value for the 2000 P nickel shown?
The overlay covers the steps. Does this nickel have 12? 6 on each side?
