Picked this up over the weekend. I keep finding these lately.
Did not think much of it until I got it home. Figured it was just another planchet. Weighs in @ 3.1 grams. Both sides are smooth with no signs of it going through the upset mill. Not positive though.
Any thoughts ?

Type 1 ?
Also, this seems to be a 95% copper not plated.

The blank is referred to as type 1 The upset planchet is often called type 2.

Oh I see. I was just a little confused when I saw those pics.
I had read somewhere once that these blanks are rarer out there than
planchets. that it would be, for some reason harder to get those
out into circulation than planchets. wonder what the ratio/numbers are
on these.

The Zincolns are from an outside source. The copper planchets were homemade like the other planchets.

So mint employees could take the blanks home easily
back when/then ?
If that is what you mean by home made (mint)
or Homemade as in slugs ?
I'm just curious as to how both the blanks and planchets
get into circ. and if the planchets are more available in circ.
or the blanks ?

You can actually buy cent planchets from the mint, though there overpriced. One comes in the Collecting America's Coins Beginners Basics Set thats still available for sale on the mint web site. Occasionally blank planchets also slip through the mint when they get stuck in the bottom of bins and then come loose again and other circumstances.
