I just found this 1997 cent. It has the look of a new steel war penny. The devices look too sharp for there to have been an acid removal of the copper. Any chance there's a plating over the copper plate? Any thoughts on this would be appreciated. I did the best I could with the photos. Still lacking in that department.

Wow, the pix give it a copper hue but there is no hint of copper on the actual coin.

I would question this one. Usually if a coin has been copper plated certain years the coin has many bumps on it from the reaction of a poor rinse. Yours shows these bumps, but looks shiny and gray. Like it was plated over a copper previous plating. If the coin was an unplated coin the texture would be flat looking and not shiny. But that is just what I see. Another poster may have a different idea on your coin.

I have seen 4 of these in the last couple of weeks. 3 of them I scratched through on the edge and found copper. The fourth one I don't see the copper when scratched so I don't know what to think. For me, seeing a bunch of these all of a sudden sends up a BIG red flag!

I forgot to mention that I did scratch on the edge & found no copper. BTW, the coin weighs 2.6 gms. Hockingzig, where did you find others like this one. Maybe on ebay for zillions of dollars ? Really, where did you find them ?

I found all of them roll searching. I think they were all post 82 except one so I knew that one was a fake. They all weighed out right but plating probably would not add a significant amount of weight. As I said, all but one showed copper and now I am really perplexed about the one that didn't. I would hate to send it back into circulation and be a real unplated planchet. If anyone knows of another non-destructive method for testing, please let me know.

It's most likely nickel plated, but it's plated for sure.

These coins are turning up all over the place. I am finding mostly the gold plated ones though. People are finding out that the plated junk they bought off the HSN is worthless and the coins are ending up in rolls.

Thanks,
Bill
