I've noticed quite a few 1980s that look like these 2.

Is Machine Doubling or Die Deterioration a common occurance with this date, if that is really what's showing here ?

Machine doubling. They always make me look a second time on this year. I've got one those. So I save it to prevent someone else from having a heart attack over it. LOL

It's definitely Machine Doubling, and it's pretty common for a lot of dates.

1980 seems to be a date where the obverse dies suffered a great deal of die wear. That's all I have really noticed especially with 1980.

There is a nice 1980 DDO that has some good doubling on the date. These however are indeed machine doubled.
