Hello everyone! This is my first post so first off let me say welcome. I'm in the process of moving, so today while packing boxes I stumbled across my old coin collection from when I was a young child. I was browsing through my Indian Head cents when I came across a 1905 specimen with a very large "G.E.C" stamped onto both sides of the coin. I tried googling, and the best I can come up with is that it probably stands for "General Electric Corporation." I doubt it's related to the GEC rating system since why would it be stamped onto the coin? Anyone know anything about this?

It's what is known as a counterstamp. Throughout history people have marked coins with initials and other markings. We may never know who did this to your coin or why. I have a Buffalo nickel counterstamped with a GLT. I keep it with my other damaged coins that I want to save. No significant value...just a curiosity.

I think there is collector interest for counterstamped IHCs, particularly if they're documented to be done around the Civil War. Whatever the year, it's a cool thing to have because it was probably done while IHCs were in circulation.

Only really collectible if it can be attributed to a source for the counterstamp. Anonymous letter punches are not very collectible.
